Self-esteem

People who experience an absence of recognition from other people – family, friends, managers, teachers – can have low self-esteem and a poor self-image. Self-esteem is about how we experience our worth as human beings, and how it actually feels to be who we are.

There are many things in your life that affect your self-esteem, as it is made up of a good mix of impressions, experiences, choices, values, dreams, reactions and goals. Your self-esteem says something about how you see yourself, your worth and your abilities. Poor or low self-esteem can be expressed through:

  • Negative thoughts about oneself and one's own abilities

  • Strong fear of being disliked

  • That one puts own needs aside in order to be recognized by others

  • A strong conviction that one will always fail
